My freshman year at the University of Michigan, I joined the rowing team. We were a group of 80 tight-knit guys (and a few coxswains) brought together by one thing: rowing workouts suck. As Daniel Brown put it in The Boys in the Boat, “It’s not a question of whether you will hurt, or of how much you will hurt; it’s a question of what you will do, and how well you will do it, while pain has her wanton way with you.”
While traveling regatta to regatta, I brought along my camera to document the rowing experience. That year, michigan impressively won three national titles: ECAC, ACRA, and Dad Vails.
An 83 year old homecoming tradition, fraternity brothers from what had been the Michigan chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (kicked off campus for hazing allegations) challenged other greek life members to a messy game of mud football. My camera still has mud caked on it.
